Facing the Divorce Maze
First Steps on the Bridge to Financial Security
First Steps on the Bridge to Financial Security
Author and financial self-defense expert Hollis Colquhoun knows firsthand the financial struggles women go through in divorce. An Accredited Financial Counselor who worked 20 years on Wall Street, she persevered through a difficult divorce and major surgeries while raising a family and achieving financial independence. She holds a black belt in Karate and applies martial arts principles to teach women to defend themselves financially.
"I understand the devastation of divorce, the process of rebuilding, overcoming obstacles and the importance of financially and physically empowering women, firsthand," she says.
Hollis counsels women from the difficult early stages of ending a marriage, when they need sound financial advice to navigate feelings of anger, loss and betrayal and build a new future. Her book, Women Empowering Themselves: A Financial Survival Guide, provides women with a concise, step-by-step tool to achieve financial independence – and regain their self-confidence.
"Women go through stages emotionally, but when they get to the point they are going to leave they have to understand their worth on a variety of levels," she says.
This is critical for all women going through divorce, but especially stay-at-home moms who left the workforce to raise families and women whose marriages ended due to a husband's infidelity. For women whose self-confidence has been battered, learning to take control of their finances can be a cathartic step toward a new life of independence.
Hollis advises women in these circumstances to write out everything they contribute to raising their families. "Even if you don't have a full-time, income paying job, the value you provide to the household or your husband can translate into a dollar value," she says. Knowing this value empowers women to better protect themselves and their children during divorce.
Women Empowering Themselves: A Financial Survival Guide, gives women the nuts and bolts information they need to pursue training for a new career and secure "rehabilitative alimony" that can help them get the education they need.
Hollis works with women who suffer from what she calls Money Anxiety Disorder (M.A.D.) helping them overcome anxiety over finances to take charge of their future. Her "F.E.S.T." (Financial Education and Survival Training) seminars combine self-defense principles from her martial arts background with financial tools and strategies from her work as a consumer credit counselor, Accredited Financial Counselor and a financial adviser.
With its straightforward, instructive format, Women Empowering Themselves: A Financial Survival Guide is different from other books on finances for women. The book is based on a counseling session that a client would receive at a nonprofit credit counseling agency. It does not offer advice on investing, insurance or estate planning. Instead, it provides basic financial education, tools, interactive charts, resources, warnings, and a step-by-step method to become financially empowered.
The book is small enough to fit in a woman's bag so she can carry it around with her at all times, make expense entries as they occur, and get reference and resource information as needed. It's a survival tool designed to help any woman take control of her financial destiny and move toward financial security and independence.
